Xfinity Speed Test Review

Most people know what internet speeds they’re paying for, but many folks don’t know whether they’re actually receiving those speeds or not.

Your internet service provider (ISP) controls your speeds in large part, due to factors like the quality and consistency of their service, and the reliability of their network.

If you want to know exactly how fast your internet connection is operating, you can run a speed test. There are quite a few reputable online speed tests available, so today we will examine the Comcast speed test also known as the Xfinity speed test to determine whether it’s a reliable resource for you.

Review Methodology

In any internet speed test, the most important ingredient is the ISP’s ability to measure download speed, upload speed, and ping and/or latency. To test the accuracy and regularity of each service, we run five speed tests from the same location, using multiple devices to rule out the possibility of our hardware affecting the test results. We close all programs except the Google Chrome browser that we use to run the test, and we disable any plugins. By taking these steps, we are able to develop a repeatable testing scenario with reliable results.

Xfinity Speed Test / Comcast Speed Test Results

# Startup Time [s] Test Duration [s] Ping / Latency [s] Download Speed [Mbps] Upload Speed [Mbps]
Speed Test 1 2.2 27.8 9 242.8 12.0
Speed Test 2 1.9 27.8 8 229.6 9.5
Speed Test 3 2.2 25.2 13 253.1 12.1
Speed Test 4 2.1 27.6 11 243.8 10.3
Speed Test 5 2.4 27.7 12 236.1 11.6

The connection we used to run the Xfinity speed test is advertised to deliver download speeds that run up to 250 Mbps. The results were almost exactly what we expected ― they’re right in line with the connection speeds promised by our ISP, and they’re also in the same range as results from other competing speed test applications.

We ran the Xfinity speed test on a laptop and a smartphone, taking some screenshots along the way, which you can check out for yourself below. As for the results, loading times averaged 2.2 seconds, and the test itself took 27.2 seconds to complete. The mean download speed was 241.1 Mbps, and the mean upload speed checked in at 11.1 Mbps.

Pros and Cons of Xfinity Speed Test

Pros

One of our favorite aspects of the Xfinity speed test is the combination of sleek presentation and modern graphics. Whether you use the site’s desktop version or the mobile version, this is one of the best-looking speed tests available today. There are also no on-screen ads cluttering the display and potentially slowing their test speeds.

As for the test’s functionality, a big advantage for Xfinity is the way they let you select your own testing location. If you just want to use the nearest testing site to your location, Xfinity will automatically choose it for you. However, if you want to see what speeds you can get from a specific Xfinity server, simply click the Advanced Settings tab on the upper right-hand corner of the screen to access a drop-down menu of every Xfinity testing site available in America.

After the test is complete, you are provided with a link to share your test results, and Xfinity also lays out a few simple tips for increasing speeds ― including router placement, device capabilities, and updating operating systems and internet browsers.

Cons

The main disadvantage to Xfinity’s speed test is the fact that it does not run on a secure connection. Some more minor complaints include the inability to save your test history, as well as the rather limited information regarding the IP address used for testing. While these features would be nice to have, they’re also not entirely necessary for the majority of users.

Xfinity Internet Speed Test Conclusion

Overall, the Xfinity speed test has many more advantages than disadvantages. The ability to choose your own preferred testing location is a great feature that few competitors have. Considering how important the proximity of bandwidth test servers is to the results of any speed test, it’s a welcome feature.

In addition, the test runs on a sleek and modern interface that’s easy on the eyes, and the information is presented in a straightforward manner. There’s also no advertising filling up the screen, which is a problem area for some competing speed tests.

The only major shortcoming of the Xfinity speed test is the fact that it does not operate on a secured connection, which is a bit of a head-scratcher these days. Still, due to their many pros and relatively few cons, Xfinity’s speed test is still an easy recommendation to make.
